Innovative Herbal Anti-Acne Gel Developed by Pharmacy Researchers Demonstrates Promising Therapeutic Potential

In a significant advancement in herbal dermatological research, Ms. Ishika Dhurandhar and Mr. Saraswati Prasad Mishra from Krishna's Vikash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, Raipur, have successfully developed a novel herbal anti-acne gel formulated with a synergistic combination of pineapple extract (Bromelain) and Berberine extract. The research represents an important contribution toward the development of safer, plant-based alternatives for the management of Acne vulgaris, one of the most prevalent dermatological disorders affecting adolescents and young adults worldwide.

Acne vulgaris continues to pose a considerable public health challenge, affecting nearly 85% of individuals between 12 and 24 years of age. The condition arises from a complex interaction of excessive sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinisation, microbial colonisation by Cutibacterium acnes, and inflammatory responses, often leading to persistent skin lesions, scarring, and reduced quality of life. Although conventional treatment modalities—including topical antibiotics, retinoids, and benzoyl peroxide—remain widely prescribed, their long-term use is frequently associated with adverse effects such as skin irritation, dryness, photosensitivity, and the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance.

Recognizing these limitations, the researchers explored the therapeutic potential of natural bioactive compounds with established pharmacological properties. The formulated herbal gel combines Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple known for its potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing activities, with Berberine, a naturally occurring alkaloid recognized for its broad-spectrum antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. The dual-action formulation is designed to target multiple pathogenic mechanisms involved in acne development while minimizing the adverse reactions commonly associated with synthetic medications.

The research involved the systematic formulation of a Carbopol-based topical gel followed by comprehensive physicochemical characterization. The prepared formulation underwent rigorous evaluation for critical quality parameters including pH, viscosity, spreadability, homogeneity, drug content uniformity, washability, skin irritation potential, and stability under controlled storage conditions. The optimized formulation demonstrated excellent physical stability, uniform consistency, desirable spreadability, appropriate skin-compatible pH, and minimal irritation, highlighting its suitability for topical dermatological application.

According to the investigators, the combination of pineapple extract and berberine exhibited complementary pharmacological actions capable of reducing microbial proliferation while simultaneously suppressing inflammatory mediators involved in acne pathogenesis. Such a multifaceted therapeutic approach may offer enhanced efficacy compared with formulations relying on a single active constituent.

The study further underscores the expanding role of herbal pharmaceutical research in addressing global healthcare challenges through evidence-based natural therapies. As consumer preference increasingly shifts toward safer and sustainable medicinal products, herbal dermatological formulations are emerging as attractive alternatives within both pharmaceutical research and cosmetic science.
